Carbon abundances and 12 C / 13 C from globular cluster giants

چکیده
The behaviour of the ∆ν=2 CO bands around 2.3 μm was examined by comparing observed and synthetic spectra in stars in globular clusters of different metallicity. Changes in the C/C isotopic ratio and the carbon abundances were investigated in stars from 3500–4900 K in the galactic globular clusters M71, M5, M3 and M13, covering the metallicity range from –0.7 to –1.6. We found relatively low carbon abundances that are not affected by the value of oxygen abundance. For most giants the C/C ratios determined are consistent with the equilibrium value for the CN cycle. This suggests complete mixing on the ascent of the red giant branch, in contrast to the substantially higher values predicted across this range of parameters by the current generation of models. We found some evidence for a larger dispersion of C/C in giants of M71 of metallicity [μ] = [M/H] = -0.7 in comparison with the giants of M3, M5 and M13, which are more metal deficient. Finally, we show evidence for lower C/C in giants of globular clusters with lower metallicities, as predicted by theory.

متن کاملDeep Mixing and Metallicity: Carbon Depletion in Globular Cluster Giants
We present the results of an observational study of the efficiency of deep mixing in globular cluster red giants as a function of stellar metallicity. We determine [C/Fe] abundances based on low-resolution spectra taken with the Kast spectrograph on the 3m Shane telescope at Lick Observatory. Spectra centered on the 4300Å CH absorption band were taken for 42 bright red giants in 11 Galactic glo...
متن کاملAn Improved Bandstrength Index for the Ch G Band of Globular Cluster Giants
Spectral indices are useful tools for quantifying the strengths of features in moderate-resolution spectra and relating them to intrinsic stellar parameters. This paper focuses on the 4300Å CH G-band, a classic example of a feature interpreted through use of spectral indices. G-band index definitions, as applied to globular clusters of different metallicity, abound in the literature, and transf...
متن کاملA Large C+n+o Abundance Spread in Giant Stars of the Globular
Abundances of C, N, and O are determined in four bright red giants that span the known abundance range for light (Na and Al) and s-process (Zr and La) elements in the globular cluster NGC 1851. The abundance sum C+N+O exhibits a range of 0.6 dex, a factor of 4, in contrast to other clusters in which no significant C+N+O spread is found. Such an abundance range offers support for the Cassisi et ...
متن کاملFluorine Abundance Variations in Red Giants of the Globular Cluster M4 and Early-Cluster Chemical Pollution
We present fluorine abundances in seven red-giant members of the globular cluster M4 (NGC 6121). These abundances were derived from the HF (1–0) R9 line at 2.3357μm in high-resolution infrared spectra obtained with the Phoenix spectrograph on Gemini-South. Many abundances in the target stars have been studied previously, so that their overall abundance distributions are well-mapped. The abundan...
